Light, translucence and verticality are the themes sounded by Bortolotto Design Architect’s renovation of a three-storey Victorian row house. The gloomy, boxy rooms in the house’s “before” state have made way for a clean, minimalist open concept, modulated with shifting, shoji screen-like panels.

For the advertising agency Grip Limited, Johnson Chou wanted to create an informal, blank slate for Grip’s own creative process. He strove to convey an impression of industriousness while avoiding the trendy industrial-loft aesthetic. His palette of common industrial materials enhances the sense of informality.
Lux Spa, a manicure and pedicure bar, occupies 800 square feet in Toronto’s tony Yorkville district. The focal point is the long, white, communal manicure table visible from the street. In the pedicure area, built into the long sidewall, a stretched-out, white, biscuit-tufted banquette lends a wry, sophisticated, retro touch.
